Diversity as a Driver of Innovation: Insights from the Female FutureTech Summit 2026

Technological development is shaped by scientific progress, industrial investment and the people who contribute to both. In emerging fields such as quantum technologies and artificial intelligence, where new applications and business opportunities continue to evolve, questions around access to professional opportunities and representation in technical and leadership roles remain relevant. How women participate in these developments, and the opportunities they have to advance their expertise, is an important dimension of the broader discussion on Europe's technological future.

These topics were addressed at the Female FutureTech Summit 2026, held on 6 and 7 October alongside Quantum Effects in Stuttgart. Future8 participated as part of the Quantum Future Women network, joining discussions on women's professional experiences in emerging technology fields and the different paths from academic research into industry and entrepreneurship.

The programme also offered insights into current developments in quantum technology through a guided tour of the Quantum Effects exhibition. Participants learned about eleQtron GmbH, a startup developing trapped-ion quantum computing technology, and NVision Quantum Technologies GmbH, which applies quantum technologies to metabolic imaging. Their work illustrates the diversity of research and application areas represented in the quantum sector.

Moreover, the event highlighted the role of initiatives supporting women in these fields. Quantum Future Women, established by Germany's Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), connects women across career stages in quantum technologies, from university studies to leadership positions in research and industry. The network facilitates professional exchange and raises the visibility of women's contributions to the field. It is part of the broader Quantum Future programme, presented on Quantensysteme, the ministry's information platform for quantum research, funding and talent development.

For Future8, the summit provided an opportunity to reflect on the role of diversity in developing innovation ecosystems and translating technological progress into practical applications. Innovation emerges through the interaction of research, industry and entrepreneurial activity, with people bringing different expertise and perspectives to these processes. Creating opportunities for a broader range of talents to participate is an important consideration in building inclusive and dynamic ecosystems, supporting the development of new technologies and their wider impact on society and the economy.
